Now there is an effort to create a new tradition - burning the Confederate flag.
The movement is being led by John Sims, an "artist" in Sarasota, Florida. Sims started the initiative last year when he organized confederate flag burnings in 13 cities across the South.
The events were relatively small but generated fierce opposition from groups like the Sons of Confederate Veterans and significant media attention.
This year, Sims upped the ante. One factor that reduced participation last year, he says, was that many people who were interested did not want to go out and purchase a Confederate flag. This year he's created a downloadable "Burn and Bury" kit that allows people to print out their own Confederate flag at home, suitable for burning.
Sims also broadcast this year's activities live online.
ThinkProgress talked with Sims about his plans for the future who said he plans to make burning the flag an annual event and that he will expand the effort each year.
WBTS BATTLEFIELD IS NOW AN ACTIVE CRIME SCENE
The National Park Service is calling part of a WBTS battlefield "an active crime scene" following a series of excavations. Authorities are investigating looting at the Petersburg National Battlefield, just south of Richmond, Virginia. The battlefield describes itself as the site of the war's longest siege, lasting nine months between 1864-1865, and claiming 70,000 casualties.
"Earlier this week, one of the park employees was out doing landscape work and noticed some things were out of place," NPS spokesman Chris Bryce said. The looting happened in the eastern part of the park, the National Park Service said, citing a large number of excavated pits. Marked graves were not disturbed.
Park officials have not described what type of items or relics were stolen in the theft. Relics, like uniform buttons, rifle parts and other metallic battlefield items regularly show up on internet auction sites. The Park Service says looting a National Battlefield is a federal crime, carrying up to a $20,000 fine and two years in prison for a conviction.
WISCONSIN SCHOOL EXPELS STUDENT
A student at Nicolet High School in Milwaukee was disciplined on Wednesday for bringing a confederate flag to English class.
Dr. Robert Kobylski, Superintendent for the Nicolet School District, issued the following statement:
"On Wednesday a student made a derogatory and offensive demonstration during an English class. This action disrupted the class and is in violation of district policy. We conducted an investigation that resulted in disciplinary action. Fostering an educational community based on tolerance and respect is of the utmost importance to the administration, faculty and staff at Nicolet.
Appropriate personnel are available to assist students who wish to talk about the incident."
SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR ATTACKS HERITAGE AND TRUMP
Speaking to reporters Thursday in her office, Governor Nikki Haley said she is working toward approving the removal of a Confederate flag from a Citadel chapel.
Haley said she has told Citadel cadets that the flag was a "flying, living, breathing, representative symbol.... You can't have that representation there and have children drive by and think that they don't belong...start to go back in history for SC, you'd be replacing every street sign, every building...Our goal is to make sure every child felt welcome."
Haley was speaking to reporters ahead of the first anniversary of the June 17, 2015 shootings of nine churchgoers in Charleston.
"The state was forever changed. I see good and bad that came out of June 17," Haley said. "The bad obviously is that we lost nine people and that three other people have to live with that memory of what happened in that room that night. The good side of it was, I've never been more proud of the people in South Carolina. It should restore everyone's faith and goodness in people."
Haley said South Carolinians learned something about themselves in the aftermath of the shooting "that they didn't know" - something she credits with bringing down the Confederate flag.
She then began to blame the whole thing on Donald Trump, even though he had nothing to do with any of it and had barely begun his candidacy at the time. She said that, "Hearing that rhetoric from Trump was the reason I was vocal about it." Haley went on to say that she endorsed U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida "to show that that's not all of who we are."
As we begin another year in The Stuart-Mosby Historical Society, we do so with considerable trepidation.
Even the most oblivious amongst us cannot be unaware of the "tenor of the times." Indeed, many believe that we are not all that different from those whom we study-the people who had to deal with the state of the nation in 1860. At the age of 75, I can testify that the world in which I grew up-and frankly spent most of my adult life- had absolutely no relationship to the present state of our world in general and our country in particular. Of course, those of us interested in the badly mis-named "civil war" cannot be unmindful of the assault being made on all things Southern-history, heritage, symbols, monuments &c.-neither can we fail to see that this assault presages more and worse to come. Many in response have advised the three "cs" of modern culture: compromise, conciliation and calm-only to find that these "strategies," especially the last which is also known as "silence," tend to lead only to louder and more strident voices raised against us together with actions which are absolutely foreign to civilized discourse [see the vandalism of Southern monuments]. Not a day goes by that some building, institution or road is either renamed or threatened with being so. At present a school bearing General Stuart's
honorable name is under attack in order to force its removal. Interestingly, in all of this, polls and petitions show that the vast majority of those interested do not favor this institutional vandalism, but it never seems to matter.
One disgruntled ignoramus with an agenda trumps [no pun intended!] literally thousands of well informed and objective Americans!
It seems strange that this assault on Southern heritage and history should have started during the Susquecentennial, a time when surely this history should have been brought forward for further research leading in turn to a better understanding of the causes and consequences of the war. Instead, the Marxist strategy of
"political correctness" demands that we remain silent while history is rewritten. But far worse than our enemies are our friends who believe that it really doesn't matter! They do not understand the consequences of what is happening and so they fail to do their utmost to resist.
Frankly, we believe that every member of The Stuart-Mosby Historical Society should go out and immediately purchase a copy of Orwell's 1984! The man was 32 years off in his timing, but spot-on correct in his predictions. We naturally assume that members of the Society are interested in history. As that is the case, then certainly this quiet but savage war cannot be ignored! Below is exactly what Orwell had to say about this struggle by those who would use "history" to enslave us all:
He who controls the past, controls the future;
He who controls the present-controls the past!
So that his readers understood the nature of the world he was creating-or more precisely, predicting-Orwell defined the inevitable result of this "control" thusly:
"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
Decent people cannot permit this assault to continue without at least trying to prevent.
The Society has scored a major victory on our first front with the restoration of the statue honoring Major General J.E.B. Stuart on Monument Avenue in Richmond. Andrew Baxter, his partner Steve Roy and their company, Bronze et al, Ltd., completed the work in early May and the Society held a ceremony to thank the Donors on May 14 (see details in a separate report in this issue of the Southern Cavalry Review). With a maintenance program to be launched soon, the statue will be a gleaming tribute to Gen. Stuart for many years to come.

Mauritania, the West African country long thought to be home to the world's highest percentage of enslaved people, no longer holds that lamentable title, according to a report released late Monday.
The Walk Free Foundation's slavery index says the percentage of people living in modern slavery in Mauritania dropped from 4% in 2014 to about 1% this year.
The country, which CNN featured in the 2012 documentary "Slavery's last stronghold," now has the world's seventh-highest incidence of slavery.
North Korea ranks worst on the index. Nearly one in five people there are thought to be enslaved.
"Slavery is not a thing of the past, and we must stop thinking that it is," the Walk Free Foundation said in a statement issued to CNN. "The very nature of modern slavery means it is clandestine and hidden from view, but that doesn't mean it isn't everywhere. Every country in the world is affected."
A NOTE FROM H.K.
Any knowledgeable Southern Black can tell you that the Honorable Thomas (Stonewall ) Jackson, and his wife were more than just a friend to the African people. They cared for his spiritual welfare, and opened their home and Church and gave them an introduction to Jesus Christ like no other. And to this day that influence is still incorporated in the beings of their African ancestors.
However, it is important for you to understand that the NAACP set upon the attack of the Christian Cross of St. Andrew to raise funds for their depleting coffers, and for the new occupation of our homeland by the sons and daughters of the thieves and murders who came here under orders of Lincoln to rob, steal, rape, and murder innocent old men, men and children. Nothing else. There is no other reason that we find ourselves as a Black race once again being used as the weapon of choice against our White Southern family.
It makes no difference that the whole world was complicit in the economic institution of slavery, or that the Christian charity of the Southern White people to the African race has no parallel worldwide. Or that General Jackson and General Lee's Virginia was working so hard up until the South was illegally invaded to free the African people in honor. The bottom line is that those White folks who own the NAACP have an agenda of Southern social and cultural genocide that will make it comfortable for them to attain what they left behind. And could care less about the African people that they have duped as the Honorable General Patrick Ronayne Cleburne so well predicted.
The NAACP and the Southern Poverty Law Center are the foremost hate organizations in America today and try to disguise this fact as if they are friends to the African people. Having me to write to them is like feeding food to a dead man. I can only try to educate the masses to their treachery. God bless you!

Slave-holding and slave-trading rebels of Massachusetts resisted the might of British troops sent to disperse them, and the Southern colonies voluntarily assisted New England in its war to end British rule. Some 86 years later Southern rebels at Manassas resisted the might of New England troops sent to disperse them but had no assistance in its war to end New England rule:
"At five o'clock on Wednesday morning, a man on horseback, without cape or coat, galloped into Lexington, shouting that the British were coming up the road. Some called him to stop; but he rushed on in that mad way toward Concord. Then it was that the blood boiled in our veins. We remembered the insults and threats which had been heaped upon us so long, and swore that they should be avenged that day. Some ran through the streets, waving their hats over their heads, and hurrahing for their rights. The women ran from house to house, gathering muskets for the militia, and carrying ammunition in their aprons. No one was idle, and no one was afraid to face all the British troops - yes, and fight them too, if fighting was to be done. At last the drum beat to arms. We seized our muskets and rushed to the green. Captain Parker drew us up, seventy strong, in double rank; telling us to fight bravely in the cause for freedom. Then were heard their drums beating, and saw the bayonets peeping out from the dust, and glittering in the sun. But what could seventy men do against a thousand? Their leader galloped up like a madman; cursing, shouting, and ordering us to disperse. All at once they poured a volley at us . . . they fired again; then the dreadful scene began. The enemy marched to the storehouses, broke them open, and began the work of destruction. The flour was emptied into the river; the ball, which we had gathered with so much care, stolen or sunk in wells, and our two cannon battered and abused till they were unfit for use. Next day they began to break up the bridges; and this was more than we could bear. And soon the hills and lanes were swarming with the boys from Reading and Roxbury, who had heard of their friends being shot . . . we rushed headlong on the murderers, and drove them and their commander out of the town. O! It was glorious to be in that chase - glorious! Remember boys, how often we were insulted by [General] Gage, and called "rebels," or "Yankees" by his men! Yes, and cowards, too - cowards! The blood boils at the word! And then our bleeding men behind us! - it was glory, I say lads, to chase the rascals like deer up the road, and make them feel that "rebels" could fight as well as they!"

Have you ever wondered what it was like to serve in the Confederate States Navy?
Raphael Semmes (September 27, 1809 - August 30, 1877) was an officer in the Confederate Navy during the WBTS. Prior to this, he had been a serving officer in the United States Navy from 1826 through 1860.
During the WBTS, Semmes was Captain of the commerce raider CSS Alabama, which took 65 prizes. Late in the war, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and also served briefly as a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Semmes is the only North American to have held both ranks simultaneously.
Memoirs of Service Afloat, During the War Between the States by Raphael Semmes is an excellent book that tells what it was like to serve in the CSA Navy.
Everyone who gives a gift of $5 or more this week will receive a copy of Memoirs of Service Afloat, During the War Between the States by Raphael Semmes.

In the Age of Obama political correctness has been placed on hyperdrive, but a growing mass of citizenry is rejecting it out of hand and going to great lengths in which to do so.
This rejection is epitomized by a gun shop in Oakland, Tenn., which is handing out Bibles and your choice of an American or Confederate flag with every purchase.
As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, Big Bang Guns is making the offer to every customer who walks in the door. Located just outside of Memphis, the small gun shop (which offers its products online too, by the way) says its promotion is scheduled to run through July 14.
When the shop was asked why the promotion, manager Tony Tavares said, "Why not?"
"It's pretty patriotic to offer both and a Bible as well," he told the WFB. "It's freedom of speech with some religion to go along with it."
Cue the PC Left's outrage machine.
So far, customers have really taken to the offer and have responded very positively.
John McFarland, the shop owner, said, "The customers like it. We sell everything from $200 guns all the way up to $20,000 Barretts. It's picked up really well."
The shop owner said he's sick of seeing American traditions and values attacked so he created the promotion as a way to support those who believe as he does.
"I'm at a point in my life where I'm tired of everybody making me feel bad for what my moral beliefs are," he told the Free Beacon. "I believe there's history behind the rebel flag, I believe there's history behind the American flag, I believe in the right to bear arms, and I believe in freedom of religion."
"I just wanted to let everybody know we believe in that and we support everybody who believes in that," he added.
"We're just trying to promote American freedoms," McFarland said. "I'm pretty outspoken politically and I believe everybody has their rights. I believe if you're an atheist you have that right. I believe if you believe in God you have that right. And I believe if you believe in the Confederate flag, you believe in the history behind it, you have the right to have it. And that's where we stand and I'll stand behind that."
"To me, that's more important than any amount of business."
And to tens of millions of other Americans as well.
